β What We Use at Home
We currently use a Kinetico Premier Plus water softener in our own home.
After living with the system, we’ve found it consistently eliminates limescale from taps, shower screens, kettles and other appliances while providing softened water throughout the house without using electricity.
Before installing the Kinetico, we used a whole-house filtration system. Although it improved taste and reduced chlorine, it didn’t eliminate limescale, reinforcing the important difference between water filtration and true water softening.
If your goal is to remove hard water minerals and prevent limescale, a traditional salt-based water softener remains the most effective solution.

1. Kinetico Premier Plus β Best Premium Water Softener UK
Verdict: Best overall for high-use households
Our experience: Installed and used at home
Main drawback: Premium upfront cost

Best For
- Homes in hard or very hard water areas
- Families wanting a premium long-term solution
- Homeowners who prefer a non-electric system
- Anyone looking for continuous softened water
Overview
The Kinetico Premier Plus is one of the UK’s leading premium water softeners and the system we currently use in our own home.
Its non-electric twin-cylinder design means it can continue supplying softened water while one cylinder regenerates, ensuring there’s always softened water available. The system is powered by the flow of water itself rather than electricity, making it efficient, reliable and inexpensive to run.
After installing the Kinetico Premier Plus, we noticed a significant reduction in limescale throughout the house. Taps, shower screens and kettles remain much cleaner, while soaps and shampoos lather more effectively thanks to the softened water.
Although it’s one of the more expensive options on the market, its performance, efficiency and long-term reliability make it an excellent investment for homeowners planning to stay in their property for many years.
Although we use the Kinetico Premier Plus in our own home and have had an excellent experience with it, every household has different requirements. That’s why we’ve also included value-focused options such as the Oxford Water Softener and compact models such as the Harvey Minimax, ensuring there’s a suitable recommendation for different budgets and property sizes.
Key Features
- Twin-cylinder design
- Non-electric operation
- Meter-controlled regeneration
- Continuous supply of softened water
- Compact installation
- Suitable for combi boilers
- Highly water efficient
- Built for long-term reliability
Pros
β Excellent limescale removal
β Softened water available 24 hours a day
β No electricity required
β Efficient salt and water usage
β Quiet operation
β Compact design
β Trusted UK dealer network
Cons
β Higher upfront purchase price
β Professional installation is recommended
β Ongoing salt replacement required
Our Experience
We installed a Kinetico Premier Plus because we wanted a long-term solution to hard water rather than simply improving the taste of our drinking water.
Before making the switch, we used a whole-house filtration system. While it noticeably improved water taste and reduced chlorine, it didn’t prevent limescale from building up on taps, shower screens or appliances.
Since installing the Kinetico Premier Plus, we’ve found that limescale has been virtually eliminated, making bathrooms easier to clean and helping protect appliances such as the kettle, dishwasher and washing machine.
Our Real-World Salt Usage
One thing that has surprised me about living with our Kinetico Premier Plus is how little salt it has needed compared with what I expected.
In October 2025, I bought six 25 kg bags of tablet salt β 150 kg in total. By late August 2026, around ten months later, we are only on the final bag.
That is despite ours being a high-water-use household, so I had expected to be buying salt considerably more often.
Based on our actual use, we have consumed approximately 125β150 kg of salt over ten months, depending on how much remains in the current bag.
I have just bought another six 25 kg bags at Β£19 per bag (Β£114 total). At our current rate of use, that puts our real-world salt cost at roughly Β£10βΒ£11 per month.
Your own salt consumption can vary considerably depending on water hardness, household water use and how the softener is configured, so I would not treat our figures as a guarantee. But for us, salt consumption has been lower than I expected when we bought the system.
Who Should Buy the Kinetico Premier Plus?
The Kinetico Premier Plus is an excellent choice if you:
- Live in a hard water area
- Want premium build quality
- Prefer a non-electric system
- Plan to stay in your home for the long term
- Want softened water available continuously
Who Should Consider an Alternative?
If youβre looking for a more affordable alternative and donβt specifically need a non-electric twin-cylinder system, the Oxford Water Softener offers strong value with a mains-powered metered design.
Verdict
The Kinetico Premier Plus has earned its reputation as one of the UK’s leading premium water softeners.
Based on both our own experience and its long-standing reputation, it delivers outstanding limescale protection, excellent efficiency and reliable non-electric operation.
While it commands a premium price, homeowners looking for a long-term solution to hard water are unlikely to be disappointed.

Water Softener vs Water Filter β What’s the Difference?
One of the biggest misconceptions we see is that water softeners and water filters do the same job.
They don’t.
Although both improve water quality, they solve completely different problems.
| Water Softener | Water Filter |
|---|---|
| Removes calcium and magnesium (hardness minerals) | Removes contaminants such as chlorine, sediment and, depending on the system, PFAS and heavy metals |
| Prevents limescale | Improves drinking water quality |
| Protects appliances | Improves taste and odour |
| Extends boiler and plumbing life | Reduces contaminants in drinking water |
If your main problem is hard water, a genuine salt-based water softener remains the most effective solution. Check out the Best Water Filter for Hard Water.
If your main concern is drinking-water contaminants rather than hardness, see our Best Reverse Osmosis System UK guide or our guide for the Best Water Filter for PFAS UK.

Its compact design allows it to fit beneath many kitchen sinks where larger water softeners simply won’t fit, making it particularly popular with homeowners, apartment owners and smaller households.

Many UK homes simply don’t have room for a large water softener.
The Harvey Minimax solves this problem by offering premium softening performance in a significantly smaller cabinet.
If your main concern is fitting a water softener into a tight kitchen cupboard without compromising performance, it’s one of the strongest options available.
Who Should Buy the Harvey Minimax?
The Harvey Minimax is ideal if you:
- Live in a flat or apartment
- Have limited installation space

Water Softener Buyer’s Guide
Buying a water softener is a long-term investment, so choosing the right system is just as important as choosing the right brand.
Below, we’ve answered the most common questions UK homeowners ask before purchasing a water softener.
How Do Water Softeners Work?
Water softeners use a process called ion exchange.
As hard water passes through the resin inside the softener, calcium and magnesium mineralsβthe main causes of limescaleβare replaced with sodium ions.
The result is softened water that helps protect:
- Boilers
- Washing machines
- Dishwashers
- Showers
- Taps
- Pipework
Softened water also allows soaps and shampoos to lather more easily, often leaving skin and hair feeling softer.
Electric vs Non-Electric Water Softeners
One of the biggest decisions is whether to choose an electric or non-electric model.
Non-Electric Water Softeners
Examples:
- Kinetico Premier Plus
- Harvey Arc
- Harvey Minimax
Advantages
β No electricity required
β Continue operating during power cuts
β Generally more water efficient
β Often lower running costs
β Proven long-term reliability
Disadvantages
β Higher purchase price
Electric Water Softeners
Examples include the Oxford Domestic Water Softener, along with selected Monarch and BWT models.
Advantages
β Usually lower purchase price
β Good choice for tighter budgets
β Wide range of models available
Disadvantages
β Require electricity
β Some models cannot provide softened water while regenerating
For most UK households, we generally recommend a non-electric twin-cylinder system because of its continuous supply of softened water and excellent efficiency.
Twin-Cylinder vs Single-Cylinder Water Softeners
Not all water softeners are built the same.
Twin-Cylinder
Twin-cylinder systems contain two resin tanks.
While one cylinder regenerates, the other continues supplying softened water.
Benefits include:
- Continuous softened water
- Greater efficiency
- Better for larger households
- Excellent for homes with multiple bathrooms
Examples include:
- Kinetico Premier Plus
- Harvey Arc
- Harvey Minimax
Single-Cylinder
Single-cylinder models have one resin tank.
During regeneration, some systems temporarily stop producing softened water.
They are often:
- Less expensive
- Simpler to install
- Suitable for smaller households
Block Salt vs Tablet Salt
Different manufacturers recommend different salt types.
Block Salt
Used by many premium systems including Harvey.
Pros
β Easy to handle
β Less mess
β Consistent size
Cons
β Usually more expensive
Tablet Salt
Used by many other domestic water softeners.
Pros
β Widely available
β Often cheaper
β Easy to buy in bulk
Cons
β Heavier bags
How Much Does a Water Softener Cost?
Typical purchase prices are:
| Type | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| Budget models | Β£600βΒ£900 |
| Mid-range systems | Β£900βΒ£1,300 |
| Premium non-electric systems | Β£1,300βΒ£2,000+ |
Installation costs typically range from Β£300βΒ£700, depending on your home’s plumbing and whether additional work is required.
How Much Does It Cost to Run a Water Softener?
Most homeowners only need to budget for:
- Salt
- Occasional servicing
- Water used during regeneration
Although premium systems have a higher upfront cost, they can help reduce limescale-related maintenance on boilers, showers, taps and household appliances.
Do Water Softeners Remove PFAS?
No.
A water softener is designed to remove calcium and magnesium, which cause hard water and limescale.
It is not designed to remove:
- PFAS (“forever chemicals”)
- Heavy metals
- Nitrates
- Microplastics
- Pesticides
If these contaminants are your primary concern, we recommend installing a reverse osmosis drinking water system alongside your water softener.

Final Buying Advice
For most UK households, a non-electric twin-cylinder water softener remains the best long-term investment.
If budget isn’t your main concern, the Kinetico Premier Plus and Harvey Arc represent the premium end of the market.
If you’re looking for outstanding value without sacrificing genuine water softening performance, the Oxford Water Softener is an excellent alternative.
Whichever model you choose, installing a quality water softener is one of the most effective ways to protect your plumbing, reduce limescale and improve everyday water quality throughout your home.
Not every UK home needs a water softener. If your water hardness is low or moderate, a full system may not be necessary. Before buying, itβs best to check your water hardness by postcode to see if a softener is recommended.
Enter your postcode to see if you actually need a water softener.
π Check Water Hardness
Whether youβre in a flat, a family home or a high-usage household, this buyerβs guide will help you choose the right system for your water hardness, space and budget.
Hard water affects millions of UK homes, leaving limescale on taps, in boilers and across shower heads, shortening appliance life and increasing energy bills. A good water softener removes hardness minerals at the point of entry, protecting plumbing, improving soap performance and making everyday cleaning easier. In this guide to the best water softeners in the UK for 2026, we highlight leading options and link to specialist pages that go deeper on key choices.
In the UK, tap water quality is regulated by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI), which sets strict standards for safety, chemical limits and microbiological quality. While UK water is safe to drink, the DWI acknowledges that regional variations in hardness, pipework age and local treatment processes can affect taste, limescale levels and overall water quality. This is why many homeowners in hard water areas still choose to install water softeners and filtration systems to improve water feel, reduce scale build-up and protect appliances. You can review official UK water quality standards and guidance directly on the DWI website.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best water softener in the UK?
For most households, we recommend the Kinetico Premier Plus thanks to its non-electric twin-cylinder design, excellent reliability and continuous supply of softened water.
If you’re looking for the best balance between performance and affordability, the Oxford Water Softener is our Best Value recommendation.
Are water softeners worth the money?
If you live in a hard water area, a quality water softener can help reduce limescale, protect boilers and appliances, improve soap efficiency and reduce cleaning around the home.
Many homeowners find the long-term savings on appliance maintenance and cleaning products help offset the initial purchase cost.
Which is better: Harvey or Kinetico?
Both are excellent premium non-electric water softeners.
The Harvey Arc and Kinetico Premier Plus both use twin-cylinder technology and provide softened water continuously.
We currently use a Kinetico Premier Plus, but either system is capable of delivering outstanding hard water protection.
π Read our detailed comparison: Kinetico vs Harvey Water Softener UK
What is the difference between a water softener and a water filter?
A water softener removes calcium and magnesium minerals that cause hard water and limescale.
A water filter improves drinking water quality by reducing contaminants such as chlorine, sediment and, depending on the filtration technology, PFAS and heavy metals.
Many homeowners install both systems because they solve different problems.
Do water softeners remove PFAS?
No.
Water softeners are not designed to remove PFAS (“forever chemicals”), heavy metals or many dissolved contaminants.
If PFAS is your main concern, a reverse osmosis drinking water filter is usually the better solution.
π Read: Best Water Filter for PFAS UK
Do water softeners remove chlorine?
No.
Water softeners remove hardness minerals but do not significantly reduce chlorine.
If improving drinking water taste or reducing chlorine is your goal, consider a dedicated water filtration system.
Can you drink softened water?
Yes.
Softened water is generally safe to drink for most healthy adults.
However, because the softening process slightly increases sodium levels, some households choose to install a separate drinking water tap or reverse osmosis system for cooking and drinking.
Does softened water taste different?
Some people notice a slight difference in taste, while others notice no difference at all.
Many homeowners choose to drink filtered water while using softened water throughout the rest of the home.
How long does a water softener last?
A quality water softener can often last 15β20 years or more with proper maintenance and regular salt replenishment.
Premium systems such as Kinetico and Harvey are well known for their longevity.
Do I still need a water filter if I have a water softener?
Possibly.
A water softener removes hardness minerals, while a water filter improves drinking water quality.
If you’re concerned about chlorine, PFAS or heavy metals, many homeowners choose to install a reverse osmosis system alongside their water softener.
How much salt does a water softener use?
Salt usage depends on:
Household size
Water hardness
Water consumption
Water softener efficiency
Modern non-electric twin-cylinder systems are generally very efficient with salt usage.
Which water softener is best for a combi boiler?
Most modern domestic water softeners are compatible with combi boiler systems.
Always check the manufacturer’s installation requirements or consult your installer before purchasing.
What size water softener do I need?
The ideal size depends on:
Number of bathrooms
Household occupancy
Daily water usage
Water hardness
Larger households generally benefit from higher-capacity twin-cylinder systems.
Can a water softener reduce my energy bills?
Indirectly, yes.
Reducing limescale helps boilers, heating systems and hot water cylinders operate more efficiently, which may improve energy efficiency over time.
What maintenance does a water softener need?
Most domestic water softeners require very little maintenance.
Typically, you’ll simply need to:
Arrange occasional servicing if recommended by the manufacturer
Refill the salt
Keep the unit clean
