For systems we haven’t personally installed, I clearly distinguish manufacturer specifications and independent certification information from my own test results.

The aim is to recommend the right RO system for different budgets, kitchens and installation requirements — not simply the most expensive product.

How We Chose the Best Reverse Osmosis Systems

I compared the systems in this guide using:

  • RO filtration technology and available contaminant-reduction evidence
  • Independent certifications where available
  • Flow rate and daily water output
  • Tankless vs tank-based design
  • Remineralisation
  • Installation requirements and cupboard space
  • Filter lifespan and replacement costs
  • Wastewater efficiency
  • Current UK availability and price

Hands-on results are identified separately. My most detailed long-term experience is with the Waterdrop G5P700A, which is installed in our home; other products are assessed using current manufacturer information, certification data and their suitability for UK households.

🇬🇧 UK Installation & Suitability

Before choosing any RO system, check the following:

✔ Suitable for mains-fed UK homes
✔ Compatible with combi boiler systems
✔ Tankless models ideal for small under-sink cupboards
⚠️ Requires minimum 1–1.5 bar mains pressure
❌ Not ideal for gravity-fed systems without booster pump

Who Reverse Osmosis Is NOT For

RO is powerful — but it isn’t always necessary.

It may not be the right choice if:

  • You only want to improve taste and odour (carbon filtration is usually enough)
  • Your main concern is scale protection
  • You rent and cannot modify plumbing
  • Your water pressure is very low

For maximum contaminant removal, however, nothing beats reverse osmosis.

2. Waterdrop X12 – Best Premium Reverse Osmosis System UK

Waterdrop X12 reverse osmosis water filter for PFAS reduction UK

Best For

✔ Families with high daily water consumption

✔ Homeowners wanting the latest Waterdrop technology

✔ Premium kitchens

✔ Fast-flow drinking water on demand

Overview

The Waterdrop X12 is the premium choice in this guide for households that want very high flow, alkaline remineralisation and a smart tankless design.

Waterdrop rates it at 1200 GPD, with an 11-stage filtration system, a 0.0001 μm RO membrane, UV protection and a smart digital faucet. It also uses a 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio, which is better on paper than the G3P600’s 2:1 ratio.

I haven’t personally installed the X12, so this recommendation is based on its current specifications, certification information and how it compares with the systems I use and test at home.

Key Features

  • Tankless under-sink design
  • 1200 GPD rated output
  • 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio
  • 11-stage filtration 0.0001 μm RO membrane
  • Alkaline remineralisation
  • UV treatment
  • Smart faucet showing TDS and filter life
  • Certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 58 and 372 standards
  • F2 filter: about 6 months
  • F1A filter: about 12 months
  • X12-F3 RO filter: about 24 months

Pros

✅Very high 1200 GPD rated capacity

✅ 3:1 pure-to-drain efficiency

✅ Alkaline remineralisation

✅ Smart faucet and tankless design

✅ Long RO-filter lifespan

Cons

❌ Expensive compared with the G3P600

❌ Proprietary replacement filters are relatively costly

❌ Overkill for households that don’t need very high flow

Waterdrop X12 vs G3P600

Choose the G3P600 if you want the better balance of price, performance and running costs.

Choose the X12 if you specifically want substantially higher rated output, alkaline remineralisation and Waterdrop’s more premium feature set.

For most households, I would still choose the G3P600. The X12 makes more sense when budget is secondary to flow and features.

Bottom line: The X12 is the premium option rather than my best-value choice. Its 1200 GPD capacity, 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio and remineralisation are impressive, but most households can spend considerably less on the G3P600 and still get a capable tankless RO system.

Reverse Osmosis Buyer’s Guide

Tank vs Tankless Reverse Osmosis Systems

Which Is Better?

One of the biggest decisions when buying a reverse osmosis system is choosing between a traditional tank-based system and a modern tankless design.

Both produce excellent drinking water, but they suit different households.

Tankless Reverse Osmosis Systems

Examples:

  • Waterdrop G3P600
  • Waterdrop X12
  • Waterdrop G5P700A

Advantages

✅ Faster water delivery

✅ Takes up much less cupboard space

✅ Modern appearance

Disadvantages

❌ Higher purchase price

❌ Usually require electricity

Traditional Tank Systems

Examples like the iSpring RCC7AK

Advantages

✅ Lower initial cost

✅ Proven technology

✅ Good for lower budgets

Disadvantages

❌ Large storage tank

❌ Uses considerably more cupboard space

❌ Slower refill after heavy use

❌ Water can remain stored in the tank for extended periods

Our Recommendation

For most households with suitable plumbing and a power socket, I prefer tankless RO because it saves cupboard space and generally provides faster dispensing. Traditional tank systems remain a good lower-cost choice where cupboard space is less important.

Reverse Osmosis & PFAS

Reverse osmosis can reduce PFAS (“forever chemicals“), but performance varies between systems and specific compounds. If PFAS reduction is your main reason for buying an RO system, look for independent certification or specific test data for the model rather than assuming every RO membrane performs identically.

For UK evidence and specific filtration options, see my Best Water Filter for PFAS UK guide.

Reverse Osmosis & Hard Water

A question we’re often asked is:

Will reverse osmosis remove hard water?

The answer is yes—but only at the drinking water tap.

A reverse osmosis system removes dissolved minerals, including calcium and magnesium, from the water passing through the membrane.

However, it does not soften the water throughout your home.

That means:

  • Your kettle, coffee machine and drinking water benefit from purified water.
  • Your showers, washing machine, dishwasher and hot water system still receive untreated hard water.

If limescale throughout the home is your main concern, a whole-house water softener remains the better long-term solution.

Many homeowners—including ourselves—combine both systems:

  • A water softener protects the entire home from limescale.
  • A reverse osmosis system provides exceptionally pure drinking water at the kitchen tap.

This combination offers the best of both worlds for households in hard water areas.

👉 Read our Best Water Softener UK guide

⭐ Why This Combination Works So Well

Reverse osmosis removes hardness minerals from the drinking water passing through the RO membrane, but it does not soften water throughout your home. If your main problem is limescale in showers, appliances and plumbing, a whole-house water softener is the appropriate treatment.

In our own home we use a Kinetico Premier Plus for whole-house softening and a Waterdrop G5P700A for drinking water. See my Best Water Softener UK guide if limescale rather than drinking-water purification is your main concern.

Running Costs

The purchase price is only part of the overall cost.

You should also consider:

  • Replacement filters
  • Electricity (for tankless systems)
  • Wastewater
  • Expected filter lifespan
  • Annual maintenance

Modern tankless reverse osmosis systems are generally more efficient than older designs, making long-term ownership more economical than many people expect.

Filter Replacement

Every reverse osmosis system requires periodic filter changes.

Most systems include:

  • Sediment pre-filter
  • Carbon filter
  • Reverse osmosis membrane
  • Post-carbon or remineralisation filter

Many modern systems, including Waterdrop’s latest models, use quick-twist cartridges that can be replaced in just a few minutes without specialist tools.

Always follow the manufacturer’s recommended replacement schedule to maintain filtration performance.

Wastewater Ratio

Wastewater efficiency varies considerably between RO systems. For example, Waterdrop currently specifies 2:1 pure-to-drain for the G3P600 and G5P700A, while the X12 and K19 are specified at 3:1. Compare the manufacturer’s ratio when choosing a system, but remember that real-world performance can vary with water pressure and conditions.

Do Reverse Osmosis Systems Need Electricity?

Not always.

Traditional storage tank systems usually operate without electricity.

Most modern tankless systems require mains power because they use an internal booster pump to deliver higher flow rates and improved efficiency.

Although they use electricity, running costs remain very low for most households.

Should You Buy Reverse Osmosis?

A reverse osmosis system is an excellent investment if you:

✅ Want the highest quality drinking water.

✅ Want to reduce chlorine taste and odour.

✅ Are concerned about contaminants such as lead, fluoride or PFAS.

✅ Want filtered drinking water without relying on bottled water.

If your only concern is preventing limescale throughout your home, a water softener is usually the better first purchase.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many buyers make the same mistakes when choosing a reverse osmosis system.

Avoid these common pitfalls:

  • Buying solely on price instead of long-term running costs.
  • Choosing a system that’s too small for your household.
  • Forgetting to check replacement filter availability.
  • Ignoring installation space beneath the sink.
  • Assuming reverse osmosis softens water throughout the entire home.
  • Missing manufacturer promotions or discount codes that can reduce the overall cost.

Taking a few minutes to compare these factors before buying can save money and ensure you choose the right system for your needs.

FAQ

Is reverse osmosis safe for UK tap water?

Yes. Reverse osmosis is a safe and effective way to filter UK tap water.
Modern reverse osmosis systems use a semi-permeable membrane to reduce a wide range of contaminants, including chlorine, lead, nitrates, fluoride, microplastics and many PFAS compounds. The resulting water is highly purified and suitable for everyday drinking and cooking.
Although reverse osmosis also removes naturally occurring minerals, many modern systems—including several Waterdrop models—include a remineralisation stage to improve taste by adding beneficial minerals back into the water.
UK tap water already meets strict drinking water standards. Most people choose reverse osmosis because they want improved taste, additional filtration or extra peace of mind rather than because their tap water is unsafe.

What is the best reverse osmosis system in the UK?

My best overall choice for most UK households is the Waterdrop G3P600 because it offers a strong balance of output, compact tankless design, filtration credentials and price. The X12 is my premium choice, while the Waterdrop K19 is the countertop/no-plumbing system I’ve personally tested.

Is reverse osmosis better than a Brita filter?

They serve different purposes.
A Brita-style filter is designed to improve taste and reduce chlorine, while a reverse osmosis system removes a much wider range of dissolved contaminants, including heavy metals, nitrates, fluoride, microplastics and many PFAS compounds.
If you’re looking for the highest level of domestic water filtration, reverse osmosis is the more comprehensive solution.

Do reverse osmosis systems waste water?

All reverse osmosis systems produce some wastewater as part of the filtration process.
However, modern tankless systems are significantly more efficient than older designs, with much lower wastewater ratios. If water efficiency is important, choose a modern tankless reverse osmosis system rather than an older storage tank model.

How often do reverse osmosis filters need replacing?

Replacement schedules vary depending on the manufacturer and your water usage.
Typically:
Sediment and carbon filters: every 6–12 months.
Reverse osmosis membrane: every 2–3 years.
Remineralisation filters: according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Following the recommended replacement schedule helps maintain filtration performance and water quality.

Do reverse osmosis systems need electricity?

Traditional storage tank systems often operate without electricity.
Most modern tankless reverse osmosis systems require mains power because they use an internal booster pump to deliver higher flow rates and improved efficiency.
Although they require electricity, running costs are generally very low.

Is tankless reverse osmosis better?

For most households, yes.
Tankless systems take up less cupboard space, provide faster water delivery, reduce the risk of stagnant water and generally require less maintenance than traditional storage tank systems.
The only disadvantage is a higher initial purchase price.

Can I install a reverse osmosis system myself?

Many homeowners successfully install reverse osmosis systems themselves using the manufacturer’s instructions.
However, if you’re not confident working with plumbing connections, we recommend using a qualified installer to ensure the system is fitted correctly and leak-free.

Is reverse osmosis worth it in the UK?

For many households, yes.
Although UK tap water is safe to drink, reverse osmosis provides an additional level of filtration while improving taste and reducing many dissolved contaminants.
If you regularly buy bottled water, a reverse osmosis system can also reduce plastic waste and lower long-term costs.

Does reverse osmosis remove fluoride?

Yes.
Reverse osmosis membranes are highly effective at reducing fluoride alongside many other dissolved contaminants.
If fluoride reduction is one of your priorities, reverse osmosis remains one of the most effective domestic filtration technologies available.

How much does a reverse osmosis system cost to run?

Running costs are generally modest.
Most of the ongoing cost comes from replacing filters rather than electricity or water consumption.
Modern tankless systems are designed to minimise maintenance while providing long filter life, making them economical to own over the long term.
