About ScaleFreeHome: Independent UK Water Treatment Advice
Who We Are
ScaleFreeHome is an independent UK website helping homeowners understand water filtration, reverse osmosis and water softening.
About ScaleFreeHome: we are an independent UK website focused on practical water filtration, reverse osmosis and water softening advice.
The site is run by a UK registered healthcare professional and a qualified chemistry teacher with a chemistry degree. We combine scientific understanding with practical experience of researching, choosing and living with water-treatment systems in a real UK home.
We help UK homeowners understand [water filtration], [reverse osmosis systems] and [water softening], including what each technology can and cannot do.
About ScaleFreeHome and Our Experience
Our interest in water treatment began for a very personal reason.
When our daughter began showing signs of puberty earlier than expected, we started asking more questions about everything in our home environment — including the water we drank.
During discussions with healthcare professionals, we became interested in research around environmental exposures and the choices families can make to reduce unnecessary exposure to certain contaminants. The evidence linking individual environmental contaminants with early puberty is complex and does not establish that our drinking water caused our daughter’s experience.
But it prompted us to look much more closely at what was actually in our water, how different filtration technologies worked and whether the claims made by water-treatment companies stood up to scrutiny.
That research eventually led us to install a Waterdrop reverse-osmosis system for our drinking water and a Kinetico water softener for our home.
What started as research for our own family eventually became ScaleFreeHome.
How We Review Water-Treatment Products
Today, we research and compare products for UK households using:
- independent contaminant-reduction certification
- manufacturer performance data
- installation and maintenance requirements
- replacement-filter and running costs
- UK availability and support
- our own experience when we have actually bought or used the product
Where we’ve personally used or installed a product, we say so. Where a recommendation is based on research rather than hands-on testing, we make that equally clear.
Our Qualifications & Experience
ScaleFreeHome is run by:
- a UK registered healthcare professional
- a qualified chemistry teacher with a chemistry degree
That combination shapes how we approach water-treatment advice.
We look beyond product marketing and consider the chemistry of filtration, contaminant-reduction evidence, independent certification and the practical implications for a household using the system every day.
We also have first-hand experience of living with water-treatment equipment in our own home, including a Waterdrop reverse-osmosis system for drinking water and a Kinetico water softener for whole-house hard-water treatment.
We are not water-treatment installers or laboratory scientists, so where specialist expertise or laboratory testing is required, we rely on recognised standards, independent certification and authoritative sources rather than presenting our own experience as proof.
Water Treatment Systems We Use in Our Own Home

These are the systems we currently use in our own home. The Kinetico Premier Plus is installed on our whole-house supply to deal with hard water, while the Waterdrop G5P700A is installed under our kitchen sink for drinking water. You can read our full Waterdrop G5P700A review for our installation experience, TDS results and long-term observations.
Because we live with these systems every day, we can comment on things such as installation space, maintenance, salt or filter changes, noise, convenience and long-term practicality from first-hand experience.
Where we recommend products we have not personally installed or tested, we make that clear and base our assessment on independent certification, manufacturer performance data, UK availability and ongoing running costs.
Our Commitment to Transparency
We want readers to know exactly how our recommendations are made.
Some products featured on ScaleFreeHome have been personally bought, installed and used in our own home. Others are researched recommendations based on independent certification, manufacturer performance data, technical specifications, UK availability, running costs and practical suitability.
We clearly distinguish between:
- Products we personally use or have tested
- Products we have physically inspected or compared
- Products recommended through research only
We do not claim to have personally tested a product when we have not.
Some links on ScaleFreeHome are affiliate links, which means we may receive a commission if you make a purchase through them. This does not increase the price you pay, and affiliate relationships do not determine which products we recommend.
Where a product has limitations, weaker certification, higher running costs or is simply not suitable for a particular type of household, we aim to say so clearly.
Our goal is to help readers make an informed decision — not simply to recommend whichever product pays the highest commission. You can read more about how these relationships work in our Affiliate Disclosure.
How We Research & Recommend Products
When we review or recommend a water-treatment product, we try to answer the questions that matter when you actually have to live with it.
Depending on the product, we consider:
- Independent certification and contaminant-reduction claims
- Manufacturer technical specifications and performance data
- Installation requirements and space needed
- Filter, salt, electricity and other ongoing costs
- Replacement-part availability
- Warranty and UK customer support
- Suitability for different household sizes and water conditions
- Feedback from long-term owners where useful
- Our own first-hand experience when we have personally used the product
For contaminant-removal claims, we give greater weight to independent certification and published performance data than to advertising claims.
We also update our guides when products are discontinued, specifications change or better alternatives become available.
Most importantly, our rankings are intended to help readers choose the right type of system for their circumstances, rather than suggesting that one product is best for everyone.
Local water conditions can also affect which treatment makes sense, so readers can check our UK Water Hardness Map to understand the hardness level in their area.
